Added Capital Requirements Announced for G-SIBs

The Financial Stability Board yesterday announced for the first time the additional capital required to be held by 28 financial firms—including eight U.S. institutions—designated as global systemically important banks, or G-SIBs. The additional capital requirements for U.S. institutions range from 2.5 percent in extra capital to 1 percent.

The additional capital requirements will be phased in starting in January 2016, and they will apply only to those firms designated G-SIBs in November 2014, allowing for the possibility that firms could be added or dropped off the G-SIBs list.
