After nearly four years in office, SEC Chairman Mary L. Schapiro today announced that she will step down on Dec. 14, 2012.
Chairman Schapiro is one of the longest-serving SEC chairmen, having served longer than 24 of the previous 28 chairmen. She was appointed by President Barack Obama on Jan. 20, 2009, and unanimously confirmed by the Senate. She is the only person to have ever served as chairman of both the SEC and CFTC.
The President announced that he intends to designate Elisse Walter, a current Commissioner, as Chair upon Ms. Schapiro’s departure next month.
