CFPB Signals Further Regulation of Campus Banking

The CFPB held a forum on banking on college campuses. CFPB representatives outlined subjects for “future exploration” of how banks serve college students with checking accounts, debit cards and prepaid cards.

The CFPB’s lead official on student lending, Rohit Chopra, summarized the statutes and regulations already governing credit cards and financial marketing on campus and said that the bureau hopes to explore several additional dimensions, including how to lower the costs of financial products to colleges, how to give students more and better choices, how to strengthen codes of conduct and best practices and how the federal student aid system can be a model.
